This British Standard is the English language version of EN 54-2:1997 published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Together with BS EN 54-4:1997, it supersedes BS 5839 Part 4:1988 which will be withdrawn on 1999-04-30. It is one of a series of standards for fire detection and fire alarm systems (see BS EN54-1 for a full list of current and proposed standards). The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical Committee FSH/12, Fire detection and alarm systems, to Subcommittee FSH/12/3, Control and indicating equipment, which has the responsibility to:

• aid enquirers to understand the text;
• present to the responsible European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed;
• monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK.
